In this project we learned that water has a big impact on our lives. Before we dove right into the project, we learned a bit about how water affects our lives. There was this one quote from this book called blue mind and it made me really start thinking about how much we don't really notice how much water impacts our lives. The field trips like walking around the San Diego River, walking to the bay, and snorkeling, inspired me for my piece in the project that really got me wondering.

Exploring San DiegoFor about 10 weeks we did a field trip every Thursday and it was to get us wondering more about the places we visited. For example, one of my favorite field trips was when we went to La Jolla Cove to go snorkeling. Right after we went snorkeling, we wrote a page full of our wonderings. This was really fun because instead of reading an article and wondering about the cove, I got to go out of class and actually experience it. When we came back to school, we would talk about all of our wonderings as a team or class, and we would then make our discoveries. Discoveries are documents you make when you find the answers to your questions and you put your thoughts on how you feel about it and why you care.
During our field trip to Coronado, my classmate Stefani and I made a short video of a series of clips we put together: |
ResearchingAfter our field trips, we had to pick something that we were really interested in. My topic that I chose to further research was marine reserves, specifically the La Jolla Underwater park. We were partnered with a person who had a similar topic and my partner Jacob and I had a pretty easy writing process because we went snorkeling and had a big chunk of information from my La Jolla discovery. This counted as a secondary source. For the writing process we needed to write 5 discoveries about:

Wondering BoxOur box has two main parts to it. Our source prints and pictures from the San Diego History Center and the math related to our topic. In our box, we added more pictures than articles because we didn't really find a bunch on marine reserves, but we did happen to find a few good pictures. We also decided not to put all of our articles in the box because the text from the articles are too small. For the math section of our box during our partnership, we tried really hard to find the population of fish that live in the marine reserve and how much it cost to run one and maintain a reserve. We didn't have much luck, so what my partner and I decided to do was that we would choose the three best variables that make up the Marine Reserve. The three variables that make up our box are:
